North of Negombo, the coast stretches up to the Kalpitiya peninsula, one of Sri Lanka’s best places to see dolphins and a world-famous kitesurfing spot. Is it possible as a day trip from Negombo? Yes, but it is a long day. Here is everything you need to plan it.

Dolphin and whale watching
Kalpitiya is best known for its large pods of spinner dolphins, which can sometimes number in the hundreds. Boat trips run during the calmer season from about November to April and usually leave early in the morning, when the sea is smoothest. Whales are seen occasionally, with the best chances reported around November and March to April. As with all wildlife, sightings are never guaranteed.
Kitesurfing
Strong, steady winds and flat-water lagoons, such as Kalpitiya Lagoon and the wider Puttalam Lagoon, have made Kalpitiya one of Asia’s top kitesurfing spots. The main wind season is roughly May to September, with a shorter season around December to February. Many kite schools offer lessons for beginners.
History and sights
- Kalpitiya Dutch Fort: built by the Dutch between 1667 and 1676 from limestone and coral. It has been used by the Sri Lanka Navy, so check access locally before you go.
- Dutch Reformed Church: a short walk from the fort.
- Islands and sandbanks: small islands in the lagoon and bay can be visited by boat.

Is a day trip worth it?
A day trip is possible, but you will spend five to six hours on the road. If you can, stay at least one night in Kalpitiya. If your time is short, you can still enjoy Negombo’s own wildlife without a long drive: our Negombo Lagoon Boat Tour and Monkey Island Boat Tour show you mangroves, monkeys and birdlife just minutes from your hotel.

Tips
- Book dolphin tours with a licensed operator who keeps a respectful distance from the animals.
- Take seasickness tablets if you are prone to it; the open sea can be choppy.
- Bring sun cream, a hat and water.
- Hire a private car and driver for the day; public buses are slow.
