Hidden in the heart of Negombo Lagoon lies one of Sri Lanka’s most magical wildlife experiences — Monkey Island. On this 2-hour guided boat tour, you’ll cruise through the historic Hamilton Canal, across the open lagoon, and arrive at a small uninhabited island where wild monkeys live freely in the trees.
Get up close to these curious, playful creatures in their natural habitat — no cages, no fences, just pure nature. Then venture out to the Indian Ocean for a full lagoon-to-sea adventure unlike anything else in Negombo.
Monkey Island is a small uninhabited island located in the heart of Negombo Lagoon, accessible only by boat. The island is home to a thriving troop of toque macaque monkeys — a species endemic to Sri Lanka — who have made this lush green island their permanent sanctuary.
Unlike zoo experiences or wildlife parks, the monkeys on Monkey Island are completely wild and free. They live, feed, and play entirely on their own terms. Visitors observe them from the boat, creating a respectful and authentic wildlife encounter that is increasingly rare in the modern world.
Your adventure begins at the Negombo waterfront, where you will board a traditional wooden boat with your local guide. The guide will brief you on what to expect and the best ways to observe the monkeys without disturbing them.
The first section of the tour takes you along the historic Hamilton Canal — built in 1802 and named after British Governor Gavin Hamilton. As you leave the town behind, the sounds of daily life fade and the waterway opens into the quiet beauty of the lagoon.
The boat crosses the open lagoon waters, passing several smaller islands before approaching Monkey Island. This is the best section for birdwatching — look out for brahminy kites, kingfishers, and egrets hunting along the shore.
As the boat approaches the island, you will see the monkeys moving through the trees. The troop is accustomed to boat visitors and often approaches the water’s edge with curiosity. You may see mothers carrying babies, juveniles playing in
the branches, and elders grooming in the sun.
After Monkey Island, the tour ventures out toward the Indian Ocean — the only tour in Negombo that takes you from lagoon to open sea. Feel the shift in the breeze as the boat crosses from sheltered lagoon water into the wide blue ocean.
Toque Macaque Monkeys: Sri Lanka’s endemic monkey species, recognisable by the distinctive whorl of hair on top of their heads. Social, curious, and entertaining to watch.

Water Monitor Lizards: Large reptiles — often over 1 metre long — frequently seen basking on the canal banks or swimming between the islands.
