What is there to do?

  • Relax on the sand. The park opens straight onto a wide stretch of golden beach.
  • Watch the sunset. The beach faces west over the Indian Ocean, so evenings here are spectacular.
  • Fly a kite or picnic. Local families come to fly kites, picnic and let children play.
  • Take an evening walk. Walk along the beach towards the hotels and restaurants of Lewis Place and Porutota Road.

Best time to visit

Late afternoon is the best time, roughly from 4:30pm until sunset. The heat drops, the light turns golden and the park fills with local families, especially at weekends and on public holidays. Mornings are quieter if you prefer a peaceful walk.

The west coast is generally driest and sunniest from about December to April. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings more rain and rougher seas.

Is it safe to swim?

Sea conditions on Negombo’s coast change with the season, and currents can be strong, particularly during the monsoon months. Only swim when the sea is calm, stay close to other swimmers and follow any warning flags or advice from lifeguards and locals. If in doubt, enjoy the beach from the sand.

Snacks by the sea

Along the beach you will find small snack stalls selling freshly fried treats such as spiral potato chips on skewers and crispy fried strips, which make a good snack with the sunset. Bring small notes, as most stalls only take cash.
