If the main Negombo beach strip feels too busy, look south. Between Negombo and Colombo, a long, narrow strip of land runs between the Indian Ocean on one side and the lagoon and Hamilton Canal on the other. This is the Pamunugama and Uswetakeiyawa area, a quieter stretch of coast with fishing villages, coconut palms and a handful of beach hotels. Here is what to expect.

Where are Pamunugama and Uswetakeiyawa?

  • Pamunugama is at the southern edge of Negombo Lagoon, where the Hamilton Canal meets the lagoon.
  • Uswetakeiyawa continues south along the same strip, towards Colombo.
  • The area sits between the sea and the canal, so you have water on both sides.
  • It is south of the lagoon mouth, so from the main Negombo beach hotels you need to go around the lagoon by road.

What is the area like?

This is a mostly residential and fishing area rather than a tourist resort. Expect long sandy beaches, fishing boats pulled up on the sand, small churches and village life. A few hotels and villas here market themselves as quiet, beachfront alternatives that are still within reach of the airport.

Who will like it?

  • Travellers who want peace and quiet near the airport
  • Couples looking for a calm beach stay
  • Visitors who enjoy seeing everyday fishing village life
  • Anyone who does not need lots of restaurants and bars on the doorstep

Things to keep in mind

  • Fewer facilities. There are far fewer restaurants, shops and ATMs than in Negombo’s main beach area.
  • Swimming conditions vary. The sea can be rough, especially from about May to September. Ask your hotel about safe places to swim and never swim alone.
  • Transport. You will usually need a tuk-tuk or taxi (or a ride-hailing app such as PickMe or Uber) to get around.

Combine with Negombo

Staying south of Negombo is a good base for nature lovers. Muthurajawela Marsh is close by, and Negombo town is a short drive away for the fish market, St. Mary’s Church and our lagoon boat tours. For another quiet beach, try Morawala Beach.

For another quiet beach with a reef, see our Morawala Beach guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pamunugama near Negombo?

Yes. It is at the southern end of Negombo Lagoon, south of Negombo town.

Is Uswetakeiyawa good for swimming?

It depends on the sea. Conditions can be rough, especially during the south-west monsoon. Always check locally first.

Is it a good place to stay near the airport?

Yes, if you want somewhere quieter than Negombo’s main beach strip and do not mind fewer restaurants and shops nearby.
