Negombo’s areas at a glance
| Area | Best for | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| Porutota Road / Ethukala | First-time visitors, beach lovers | Main tourist strip, lively |
| Lewis Place | Budget travellers, beach access | Relaxed, guesthouses |
| Negombo town | Culture, transport, short stays | Busy, local |
| Kochchikade and Waikkal (north) | Resorts, peace and quiet | Calm, spread out |
| South of the lagoon (Pamunugama) | Quiet beach stays | Village, few facilities |
| Katunayake / Seeduwa | Very early or late flights | Practical, near the airport |
Porutota Road and Ethukala: the main beach strip
This is Negombo’s main tourist area, north of the town centre. Large beach hotels line the sand, and the road behind them is full of restaurants, bars, shops and tour desks. It is the easiest choice for a first visit, with everything within walking distance. Negombo Beach Park is here too.
Lewis Place: budget-friendly by the beach
Lewis Place runs along the beach closer to town. It has many smaller guesthouses and family-run hotels, often at lower prices than Porutota Road. It is a good base if you want to be on the beach but closer to the town sights.

Negombo town: for culture and convenience
Staying in town puts you close to the bus and train stations, St. Mary’s Church, the Dutch Fort, the fish market and the canal. It is busier and noisier than the beach, but ideal for a short stay or if you want local life. Our boat tours start from the jetty on the canal bank in town.
Kochchikade and Waikkal: quieter resorts to the north
Further north, beyond the main strip, the coast gets quieter. This area has larger resorts set in gardens, some beside rivers or the beach. It suits couples and families who want to relax, but you will need tuk-tuks or taxis to reach town.
South of the lagoon and near the airport
South of the lagoon mouth, around Pamunugama and Uswetakeiyawa, you will find quiet beach hotels in fishing-village surroundings. If your flight is very early or very late, the airport hotels around Katunayake and Seeduwa are the most practical choice.
Tips for choosing a hotel
- Check recent reviews for noise, cleanliness and beach condition.
- In the monsoon (about May to September), a pool matters more, as the sea is often rough.
- Ask whether the hotel offers airport transfers; it saves hassle for late flights.
- Look at the map: “near the beach” and “on the beach” are not the same.
