Understanding the monsoons

  • North-east monsoon (about December to March): brings rain to the east and north of Sri Lanka, but this is the dry season on the west coast, including Negombo.
  • First inter-monsoon (about March to May): hot, with afternoon thunderstorms.
  • South-west monsoon (about May to September): brings rain and rough seas to the west coast. Many local fishermen fish in the lagoon instead of at sea during these months.
  • Second inter-monsoon (about October to November): heavy afternoon rain across much of the island.

What the weather means for boat trips

The good news: our lagoon boat tours run all year. Negombo Lagoon is sheltered and shallow, so it stays calm even when the sea is rough. In the rainy months, showers often come in the afternoon, so morning tours tend to be drier. For the best sunsets, choose the Sunset Boat Tour between December and April.

What the weather means for the beach

The sea is calmest from about December to April. During the south-west monsoon, waves and currents can be strong and swimming is often unsafe. Always check conditions and follow local advice. See our guides to Negombo Beach and Negombo Beach Park.

What to pack

  • Light, breathable clothing and a light rain jacket or umbrella (all year)
  • Sun cream, sunglasses and a hat
  • Insect repellent
  • Modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees for churches and temples
