Negombo is a fishing town through and through. Every morning, boats bring their catch to one of Sri Lanka’s biggest fish markets, and the lagoon provides prawns and crabs. That means some of the freshest seafood in the country. Here is what to try, where to find it and how to order like a local.

In this guide
Why Negombo seafood is so good
- The fish market. The Lellama fish market near the lagoon mouth is often described as the second-largest in Sri Lanka, with daily auctions.
- The lagoon. Negombo Lagoon is a nursery for prawns and crabs, and “lagoon prawns” and “lagoon crab” appear on many local menus.
- The sea. Tuna, seer fish, snapper and many reef fish are landed daily from September to April, the main fishing season.
Dishes to try
Crab curry
Spicy, rich and best eaten with your hands, crab curry is the dish many visitors remember most. Look for lagoon mud crab. Ask for “less spicy” if you are not used to Sri Lankan chilli.
Prawn curry and devilled prawns
Prawns cooked in a creamy coconut curry, or “devilled”: stir-fried with onions, peppers and a sweet-spicy sauce, a Sri Lankan favourite.
Ambul thiyal (sour fish curry)
A traditional dry fish curry, usually made with tuna, cooked with black pepper and goraka, a sour fruit that gives the dish its tangy flavour.
Grilled fish and seafood platters
Many beach restaurants display the day’s catch on ice. Choose your fish, agree the price (often by weight) and have it grilled with garlic butter or spices.
Dried fish (karawala)
Salted and sun-dried fish is a Sri Lankan staple, often fried with onions and chilli. Negombo is one of the main places where it is made; read about dry fish making in Negombo.

Where to eat
- Beach strip restaurants on Porutota Road and Lewis Place: easy, tourist-friendly menus and sea views.
- Local rice-and-curry places in town: cheaper, with fish curry served alongside several vegetable dishes.
- Hotel restaurants: reliable, often with seafood buffets.
- Beach snack stalls near Negombo Beach Park: fried snacks at sunset.
Tips for ordering seafood
- Ask the price per kilo and the weight before cooking, especially for crab and lobster.
- Fresh is best in the fishing season (about September to April).
- Check the restaurant is busy; a fast turnover means fresher food.
- Spice levels vary a lot. Say “less spicy” or “Sri Lankan spicy”.
- Remember the fish markets close on Sundays.
